Details of the second and third day counseling in ICCW [dates- 8th and 9th August]:
"Would you like me to give you a formula for success? It’s quite simple, really. Double your rate of failure. You are thinking of failure as the enemy of success. But it isn’t at all. You can be discouraged by failure or you can learn from it, So go ahead and make mistakes. Make all you can. Because remember that’s where you will find success." – Thomas J. Watson
This is my second day of interaction with the students and now i know their names by heart. They felt very happy when i called them by name. So the learning-"Counselors should know the students name by heart this gives them a sense of attachment towards us and they start listening to us". Out of the six students 4 were present-Thirumalai(10th), Sabapathy(12th), Rajapandian(10th),Deepanraj(12th), two of the twelth students had gone for their special classes in school. When i enetered the room they were sincerely writing their home works and record works. All of their hand writing was really good in tamil, they felt happy when they were appreciated for their good hand writing. So my first learning was that "We as counselors should always keep finding reasons to appreciate the students and the small appreciations are remembered by these students for ever". They wanted to tell me about their mid term exams which was just over and they started saying about it.The conversation started with Deepan Raj(12th) he is a biology student and he has Bio, Tamil, Eng, Maths, Phy, Chem as his subjects. He studies in Thiru Vi Ka school. He said he wants to know how to clear in maths exams as he keeps forgetting formulae and does not find sufficient time in his exams. Next is Sabapathy(12th) he is a biology major with bio, tamil, eng, maths, phy, chem as his subjects. And wants to know about how to study for maths and Chem exams. He wanted to know how to remember formulae in maths, Equations in Chem, Grammer in english. Next was Thirumalai(10th) -He is a physically challenged guy. He wanted to know how to learn ilakanam in tamil, formula in maths, and also the year and events with regards to social. Rajapandian(10th) too had the same points. Since they had record work to finish and it was their lunch time, i thought of winding up the discussions. They asked me what is expected from them for the next week i was quite surprised at this question since i was not ready with an answer. So my 2nd learning -"A counselor should be prepared with the tasks to be given for the child because they expect some interesting assignments from us". So i said to them that they have to neatly put a cover to their text books for the next week and had to come up with some of their unique talent exhibits and they have to portray it during the next meet.
Next visit happened on 9th Aug 2009, this time 5 were present which includes Karnan(12th) commerce group studies in Thi ru vi ka school and one guy was out for some work Manikandan(12th) computer science student. Since it was a sunday they were in a happy mood and were very playful. This served as a perfect to know more about them. Karnan(12th) was a very good orator, poet and on the spot speech preparator. If we give him a topic in tamil he can immediately tell a poem or 4 lines on that topic, i was amused at this wonderful talent i gave him topics like - "Women's right", "nature", etc and he was too fast in giving a poem on it and speech on it. Sabapathy(12th) was very good at immitating others and tried a little bit of mimickrey too, he imitated his teachers and friends and mimicked Karunanidhi's voice. Thirumalai was also good at Karunanidhi's voice and he shared so many stand alone jokes. Guys said Rajapandian is very good at dance but he dint have a music to dance for and said he can dance only if he has music.
One thing that pinched my heart is that when they all started immitating their teachers they were using bad words and to my shock they said their teachers use these words to them when they are naughty in the school. Few of them are like using bad words and telling them they are fit for nothing are the common things that all these guys mimicked. So first of all "We counselors have to re ensure the students that they are fit for everything in this world and everything starts with hope and self confidence".
Looking forward for your inputs and valuable comments. The next meet would happen on next saturday/sunday(15th/16th aug).
All of them have asked for some help in english grammer.

Career Counseling Experiences And Learning
Career Counseling For 12th and 10th std underpriviledged Students!
ICCW career counseling session started on 1-Aug-2009 (saturday). There are totally 6 students(4 in 12th standard and 2 in 10th standard). Myself, Vivek and Naveen were there to have an ice breaking session with the students. It was first time of my life that i could realize the zeal and enthusiasm in young minds about their career. Since it was only first visit i dont have their names by heart but their faces are registered in my mind. We showed them PPT about what is career and few slides about great scientist APJ.Abdul Kalam and Oscar winner A.R. Rahman. Then i asked them close their eyes and made them imagine as if their career is up and they have all become what they wanted to in their life...
The students closed their eyes and they were dreaming about their future. After 10 minutes i asked them to open their eyes and started calling one by one in front of the crowd to hear what they imagined in that 10 mins. The answers were brilliant and interesting. 1st student said he became an IAS officer , he saw so many villagers standing in his office to give petitions to him about their variuos issues and he had collected all the issues and started working on it by assuring the vilagers that all their problem would get solved very soon. 2nd student said he became a Doctor, he was wearing white coat and having a stethescope and treating sick people. 3rd student said he became a Software Engineer, he said he was in his office cabin with his own lap top and working seriuosly on his new software which he plans to develop on his own and sell it in the market. He was in his neatly iorned shirt and wearing tie and shoes. 4th student again said he become a Doctor, this guy was very smart he enacted to us what he was dreaming, he came in a car, parked it, came into the room where his patients were waiting smiled at them then went into his clinic and asked the nurse to call the patients one by one and started giving treatments to them. 5th and 6th student told they want to become computer engineers and said they were dreaming of owning software comapny.
This is only the begining the best is yet to follow. A counselor (Naveen) has agreed to counsel for the thenth standard students and am planning to take up the counseling for twelth. Our group has been named as STAR FRIENDS. Am sure all the six will come up very well in their life and we (counselors) are sure to do our best to help them achieve in life :)... I have planned to have the next meeting on this saturday... To know about their academics and other detailed informations to prepare an action plan on how to go forward.
